Preparing for Your Trinity Grade Exam

Your Guide to Exam Success

Trinity College London examinations are among the most respected music assessments in the world. At Harmonic, our students consistently achieve outstanding results — and we want to share the strategies that make this possible.

Start Early, Plan Smart

The key to exam success begins months before the examination date. We recommend starting preparation at least 3-4 months in advance. Here's a recommended timeline:

  • 4 months before: Select your pieces and begin learning notes

  • 3 months before: Work on musicality, dynamics, and expression

  • 2 months before: Focus on technical exercises, sight-reading, and aural tests

  • 1 month before: Performance practice, mock exams, and polishing
  • Choosing Your Pieces

Piece selection is crucial. Choose repertoire that:

  • Showcases your strengths while demonstrating range

  • Contrasts well with each other in style, tempo, and character

  • Genuinely excites you — examiners can tell when a performer loves their music

  • Is appropriate for your current level with room for musical interpretation
  • Technical Exercises

Don't neglect the technical work! Scales, arpeggios, and studies may seem tedious, but they form the foundation of confident playing. Practice them daily, starting slowly and gradually increasing tempo. Focus on evenness, tone quality, and musical phrasing even in technical passages.

    Sight-Reading Tips

Sight-reading can be the most anxiety-inducing element, but it doesn't have to be. Build your sight-reading skills by:

  • Practicing with new material every day (even just 5 minutes helps)

  • Looking for patterns: key signature, time signature, recurring rhythms

  • Scanning the whole passage before you begin

  • Keeping going even if you make mistakes — continuity matters more than perfection
  • Aural Tests

Train your ears daily. Listen actively to a wide range of music. Practice:

  • Clapping rhythms back from memory

  • Singing intervals and melodic phrases

  • Identifying cadences and chord progressions

  • Describing musical features using appropriate vocabulary
  • "Success in examinations comes not from last-minute cramming, but from consistent, thoughtful practice over time." — Prof. Elena Vasquez

    On the Day

  • Arrive 15 minutes early to warm up

  • Bring all required materials: music, ID, exam fee receipt

  • Take a deep breath before each piece

  • Remember: the examiner wants you to succeed!
  • Contact our exam preparation department to enroll in our dedicated Trinity prep program.
